Princess 2018 Newsletter

Dear Southwest Friends and Family,

It’s hard to believe summer has come and gone.   Twelve weeks of summer vacation from school sure did fly by!  Next week I begin fourth grade at EP Clarke Elementary School in St. Joseph.

I have really enjoyed my experience so far, as Southwest Michigan’s Princess for 2018.   I have met so many people of all ages and have gotten to participate in a variety of events.  My first parade as a princess was the Strawberry Festival parade in Hartford.   It was a rainy day, but the rain stopped just in time for the parade!   In June I also participated in the Watervliet 4th of July parade.  I think I officially mastered my princess wave after these two parades!  We had our first car wash fundraiser in June.   The weather didn’t cooperate much that day.  It was pretty rainy so we didn’t have very many customers, but those that did come were very happy to see us and all of us really enjoyed the day.

July fourth was a busy day.  I was in three parades!  I started off my day at the South Haven parade.   It was a big parade and a lot of people came to watch the parade.   The second parade I was in was in the town of Eau Claire.   The third and final parade was in Berrien Springs.   It’s neat to see each little town’s uniqueness and I enjoyed being in the parades and engaging with the crowds.

In August I attended the live butterfly release at the Willow’s nursing home.  This was so much fun!  The butterflies were beautiful and brought so many smiles to the resident’s faces.   The residents at the home were so grateful to have us attend this event.  I met so many nice people.

The Southwest events kept me very busy this summer and so did my family!  We had a great summer and did so many different things.  My mom and I took my sister, Kennedy, who is three, to Sesame Park in Pennsylvania in early July.  It’s a theme and water park centered around the Sesame Street characters.   I also spent a week with my cousins from North Carolina.   I went camping for a week up North with my extended family.   My parents and my sister and I wen to Texas in August.   We visited a few different areas of Texas and spent some time on the ocean.   I added four new states to my map this summer.  I have been to twenty of the fifty states.   My goal is to get to all fifty!

I’m truly enjoying my year as Southwest Michigan’s Princess.  I can’t wait to see what the next three months have in store for me.   I’m looking forward to all of the holiday events and the goodwill tour.

Sincerely,

Makenna Kate O’Donoghue
